Written by Alfonso Muñoz on May 5, 2008 – 4:46 pm

I suppose of you know what is a blog, but if somebody doesn’t know, this is a blog. If we are entering the world of blogs we see that there are several solutions that will enable us to fulfill as a blogger, but between all of them in my opinion there is one that is an undisputed leader in versatility and control, is none other than WordPress.

I will make a short summary of the characteristics of WordPress that most concern to anyone who wants to start in the world of blogs.

License and Platform

  • License: WordPress runs under GPL (General Public Licence).
  • Platform: PHP (v4.2 or higher) and MySQL (v3.23.x or higher) are needed in order to work with it.

Local facilities

WordPress is designed to be installed on your own server or a shared server, which gives you full control over the whole blog if you need to change anything, unlike other services provided by third parties that limit you in case of wanting to modify parts. This means you can also install WordPress on your own computer or even an intranet.

User Management and Profiles

WordPress lets you create multiple users associated with different user profiles. This permits to perform different functions in case you want to share a blog with other people.

Generating dynamic pages

You don’t need to rebuild your pages each time you change something. All pages are generated using the information contained in the database and they are formatted by templates every time you request a page. That means updating your blog or change the design becomes something really fast, and the space needed to store the blog is reduced to a minimum

Spread your Work

Through RSS (Really Simple Syndication) your readers have the ability to subscribe to your publications. WordPress also supports RSS 2.0 for the distribution of mp3 files, also known as podcasts.

Inter-Blog Intercomunication

You can be permanently connected with other blogs in the blogosphere through Pingbacks and TrackBacks, two useful ways to automatically tell other blogs when you write about them and vice versa.

Customized Designs

WordPress works with a template system (themes) and it allows it to generate pages dynamically, Also it allows you to customized the appearance of those pages. Changing the look of your blog is as simple as a click of the mouse to select a new theme.

System Plugins

These elements extend the functionality of your blog. There are a lot of plugins you can use to do almost anything you can occur.

Content Creation

WordPress not only lets you create articles but provides a wide range of features such as

  • Protection of posts using passwords.
  • Programming articles for an specific date and time.
  • Upload images to incorporate them into your posts.
  • Organize your publications into categories.
  • Save your items in unfinished drafts to continue at a later time.
  • Writing posts via email.
  • Use smilies :) .
  • And much more.

Searches your blog

A key element that can not miss a blog with a lot of articles is the search tool among all the existing content.

Comments System

WordPress allows you to moderate the comments made by your visitors in order to separate those who may be spam. The options of moderation are:

  • You can moderate every comment before being published on the blog.
  • You can specify some word to automatically place comments that have them under moderation.
  • You can filter comments from certain IP addresses.
  • Comments containing more than a certain number of links can be placed under moderation.
